Rick Astley Sues Yung Gravy for Imitating His Vocals on "Betty (Get Money)"
Damn Astley, you so vicious!
Published Jan 27, 2023This is not a Rickroll! Rick Astley is suing Yung Gravy for impersonating his voice on his viral TikTok hit "Betty (Get Money)."
As per TMZ's reporting, legal documents filed by Astley on Thursday (January 26) claim that Gravy and his producers — who obtained the licensing to use the just instrumental portion of "Never Gonna Give You Up" on the track — "conspired to include a deliberate and nearly indistinguishable imitation of Mr. Astley's voice throughout the song." Vocal impersonator Nick Seeley (a.k.a. Popnick) is also being sued.
The lawsuit points to an interview Gravy — born Matthew Raymond Hauri — did with Billboard where he admits to impersonating Astley, saying that he "basically remade" his voice "because it made it legally easier." Astley is reportedly seeking an undisclosed amount in the "millions."
Astley says because of this case, he won't collaborate with any other artists in the future. Is this how Johnny Marr felt about Astley covering "This Charming Man?" If so, this whole ordeal seems a little rich.
