T-Pain Recalls Slipping into Depression After Usher Told Him He 'Fucked Up' Music
T-Pain has opened up about how a mean comment from Usher caused him to fall into a "four-year depression."

In an episode of Banger Films' This Is Pop limited series, T-Pain recalled a moment in 2013 when Usher told him that he "fucked up music for real singers" because of his use of Auto-Tune.

T-Pain said he and his "friend" were making small talk on a flight to the BET Awards when their conversation turned nasty.

"I went back and was like, 'So how is everything going?' And he was like, 'Man, I wanna tell you something, man.' And I'm like, 'What's good?' I thought he was about to tell me something. He sounded real concerned," T-Pain said.

"And then he was like, 'Yeah man you kinda fucked up music,'" he recalled.

"I didn't understand," T-Pain explained. "Usher was my friend. He was like, 'Yeah man you really fucked up music for real singers.' Literally, at that point, I couldn't listen. Is he right? Did I fuck up music?"

He added: "That is the very moment — and I don't think I even realized this for a long time — that's the very moment that started a four-year depression for me."

Usher has yet to speak publicly on the matter, though fans and critics have come to T-Pain's defence in the wake of the accusations.

"Usher put T-Pain into depression by saying autotune f*cked up music and then went and released 'OMG,' a song full of autotune that went No.1. This man a whole demon," wrote one fan.

Music critic Anthony Fantano chimed in: "Why does everyone give T-Pain such a hard time?"
